Bruised, Not Broken

I recently suffered a contusion on my foot, and it was EXTREMELY painful. My foot felt like it had been broken, but it was only a contusion…a very painful bruise is how it was described. Contusions happen when blood vessels are broken underneath the skin due to trauma. Although it was a contusion and not a break, it still hurt to no end. That incident got me to thinking. Sometimes when we go through painful emotional events, it feels like we’re totally broken into many pieces, but we’re really just bruised. We’re hurting just below the surface.
We can be bruised with disappointment, loss, or betrayal, but we’re not broken. Most things that are broken cannot be pieced together again, but we can be. If you are able to still breathe, you can recover from your bruise. Psalm 147:3 reassures us with this, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (NIV) When you’re bruised and feel like you’re broken, please remember that our doctor, God, is there to heal your heart and your wound.
The toughest part is just trusting God enough to allow him to heal us. Even when the pain becomes unbearable, we must trust Him. Even when the pain seems like it won’t end, we must still call out to Him. Even when you feel like God isn’t listening, and doesn’t know about your pain, you have to remember Psalm 147:3 and also Psalm 34:18 which reiterates the fact that God is there for us in our darkest, most painful times. It tells us again, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
Our Doctor is always available to heal us. He’s good at His job, and He doesn’t lose a patient. Allow God to heal you by trusting Him, engaging in constant prayer, and meditating on His Promises. He knows all about your condition and can heal you any place you hurt. He can make you brand new. Remember, that pain you may be feeling right now is just a bruise, not a break.
